Do You Love Dry Body Brushing?

It's been almost six years since I wrote a post dedicated to dry body brushing. You can check it out here if you'd like but know that it's in Slovene so not that helpful for my non-Slovenian readers. Now tell me have you tried dry body brushing and do you love it? This practice is super easy and quick to do and very beneficial not only for your skin but for the whole body. You only need a few minutes and a dry body brush to do it. Done.

 Dry body brushing is known to stimulate the lymphatic system and can promote detoxification, an important part of maintaining our health and vitality. There's been such a huge boom with gua sha and talk about lymphatic system and lymphatic drainage that I'm pretty sure most of us already know what this is. If you need a little refresh, "the lymphatic system is part of the vascular system and an important part of the immune system, comprising a large network of lymphatic vessels that carry a clear fluid called lymph directionally towards the heart". We also have lymphatic organs like lymph nodes for example and we have about 500-600 lymph nodes in our bodies. I'm no doctor but I'm pretty sure we all had a swollen lymph node in our lives before - perhaps when you had a sore throat you could feel swollen node(s) on your throat. Lymphatic system has a few functions, one is to help protect the body against infection, it forms part of the body's immune system. It helps to get rid of toxins (I hate to use this word) but it helps to remove waste, viruses, bacteria, and when lymph is not flowing well, you may end up with an accumulation of waste and toxins that compromises the body’s ability to maintain a healthy state. Unlike blood circulation, which is actively moving because of the heart’s pumping action, lymphatic drainage is part of body’s passive drainage system, so it appreciates some help. You can do so by movement, exercise, clean, healthy diet, belly breathing, and of course dry body brushing.

Dry brushing is done with a dry body brush, usually before shower. I love doing it in the morning because it gives me a boost of energy, it's very invigorating, but it can be done in the evening too. Not only that it helps to move the lymph but it also makes my skin really soft and smooth. It brushes off dead skin cells and nothing is more beneficial if you're struggling with dry skin, especially on your legs.
It's really amazing and I highly recommend doing it.

So how to do it?

1. I start with my right feet and work my way up the leg with long sweeping movements. You always have to go up or more correctly you have to brush towards the heart, towards the center of your body. So I start at the bottom of my feet and then go up my leg - from the calf to my knee, and then from my knee to groin area. Dry brushing helps to reduce cellulite so you can take a few extra moments on the back of your legs and butt, and you can do some circular movements as well but I like to always end with long strokes upwards. Brush your right butt cheek up and then bring the lymph to the front of your body. Do the same on the left leg.

2. With upwards movements brush you stomach, sides of your stomach and your lower back. On your stomach you can also do clockwise circular movements because this is the direction of digestion.

3. Then I do the arms, again starting with my right side. I brush the palm of my hand & then the other side of the hand. Follow up with long strokes from fingers to my shoulder, all around my arm. Then I swipe the brush from the back and around my shoulder towards the chest. I raise my hand and swipe/brush down my armpits. Same on the left arm.

4. Then it's back to back. I start somewhere in the middle of my back (shoulder blades area) and I brush from my spine across the shoulder blades to the front of my body. Then I move to the back of my neck and do downward motions on both sides - down my neck from my hairline to the right shoulder and then same on my left side.

5. Then I do the front, or should I rather say the sides of my neck. Downward strokes from my jaw below ears to clavicle. Then I do the same moves I did before - from the shoulders I brush towards my chest, then raise one hand and brush downward my armpit and end by sweeping the brush under my boob. Same on the other side and that's it.

It may sound a bit complicated so I highly recommend watching a YouTube video or two but once you get used to it it's the easiest thing to do. I also want to mention the pressure - you can use more pressure when you're brushing your legs but when it comes to your neck & chest use lighter pressure. It depends on how much time I have or how lazy I am but I usually do about 5-10 brush strokes on one area, it also depends on the area. I do more strokes on my legs and less on my chest.

Since I mentioned bath products let me just say that I love baths so SO much but I'm always a bit wary about water consumption. Sometimes I really feel bad about it so I just take a quick shower instead but in all honesty baths are for me the ultimate self-care practice and they are the best thing I can do to relax. When I have a lot on my mind, when it's super cold, when I'm feeling down, when I'm stressed out, being able to have a bath is such a privilege and I adore them deeply. But let me go back to water.
