2017 Beauty Heroes Favourites

december 22, 2017

This year I decided to gather my thoughts and bring you my 2017 Beauty Heroes favourites. There has been so many amazing boxes this year and I struggled not to pick all of them. In the end I opted for 6 Beauty Heroes boxes (I'm a Libra alright, I can't decide) which I loved just a tad bit more than the others. And if you don't know what the heck Beauty Heroes even is, then you can read a whole lot in my introduction post to BH here. It's a monthly subscription discovery service. In each box you get a carefully selected full-size (not sample!) Hero Product and one or more Sidekicks + exclusive 15% ongoing discount as a BH member. You can subscribe here.

The founder Jeannie Jarnot and her Beauty Heroes team are the best and I'm so grateful to be working with them. It really was a dream come true when Jeannie invited me to be one of their Brand Ambassadors. I utterly adore Jeannie and what she and her team are doing for beauty community. I also utterly love and adore their curations which are almost always a massive hit in my book. With that said here are my favourite from this year. Oh and before I start with them I want to say that if it weren't for Beauty Heroes I probably wouldn't try all these beautiful products and brands this year. Out of the six brands here I've only tried one before and that was also from a previous BH box. "A brand that was on my wishlist" & "I was so excited to try it out", these are the sentences I would use for every single box but I don't want to repeat myself haha. Blah blah, here they are now.
January Beauty Heroes Discovery featured Maya Chia, a brand that is all about Chia Seed Oil, which has been clinically proven to increase skin hydration, improve skin barrier function and reduce transepidermal water loss. All my Slovenian ladies, if you're interested in trying out 100% Chia Seed Oil I saw it in Muller and Biotopic. The Hero product was The Super Couple*, a stunning facial oil with Chia Seed Oil, of course, and Astaxanthin from microalgae, with over 65 times the antioxidant levels of Vitamin C. There are also 12 other skin-supporting botanicals, like Jasmine, Bulgarian Rose and more. This serum is divine! It was everything I hoped for. And more. My skin looked so good when I was using it, I loved it. It helped with hyperpigmentation, my skin was glowing and it was just really lovely and healthy looking. The Super Couple is truly beautiful. Oh and the colour? Gorgeous! The Sidekick was the Limited Edition Waterless Wonder Balm* which I actually just mentioned in one of my previous posts here. It's equally beautiful and oh so hydrating. It really seals in the moisture + it has such a yummy scent. My first impressions here.

April Beauty Heroes Discovery featured Lilfox, a luscious and whimsical skincare line. The Hero was the Jungle Glow Enyzme Cleanser + Mask* which I loved so much I got myself another April box. Jungle Glow is based on one of my favourite ingredients - honey. More precisely Raw Rainforest Honey from Hawaii and that is pretty much all I need to know to fall in love with a product. Among the ingredients are also Maracuja Oil, Amazonian White Clay and Raw Cacao. I either use it as a morning cleanser/two minutes face mask or a full on face mask, which I leave on my face for at least 20 minutes, but preferably longer. It's hydrating, it's gently exfoliating, it's brightening, it makes my skin smooth and soft. It's dreamy. The Sidekick was Cleopatra Restorative Milk + Honey Beauty Mask*, with Coconut Milk, Rose Petals, French Rose Clay and more. This powdered mask is beautiful as well. My full review here.

June Beauty Heroes Discovery featured a Hawaiian brand Honua Skincare. The Hero was Aloha Youth Serum* which I loved dearly. Full of wonderful ingredients this hydrating and calming serum worked amazingly well on my skin. It keep it soft and plumped and I truly enjoyed this little gem. The Sidekick was Olena Turmeric Beauty Oil* and its scent wasn't a favourite of many. True, the scent wasn't my favourite either but the results on my skin sure were! This oil is divine. Anti-inflammatory and brightening this oil also helped reduced post-acne spots and sun damage on my skin. Oh it's so good. I really loved both of these products so much. When I was using them my skin was looking extra healthy and redness-free & I also had less naughty spots. Really beautiful. More here. Honua just came up with a new product which is a mask and I'm very excited to try it out.
September Beauty Heroes Discovery featured SkinOwl, which to me was so special because my first Beauty Heroes box ever featured Skin Owl. The Hero product were Beauty Drops PM, Maqui Berry*. This oil replaced Beauty Drops PM Mangosteen, because Mangosteen was no longer possible to sourced in an ethical and sustainable way. I have to say I like the new version even more. I find this oil hydrating and calming (maqui berries are anti-inflammatory) & I know lots of ladies with acne prone skin loves it. My friend also adores it and she has been using it non-stop! We are both on our lasts drops. The scent is also out of this world amazing! Sweet and fruity and just aah. The Sidekick was their new Beauty Whip Maqui Berry* which is Such a gorgeous product! It's a mask, it's a primer, it's a moisturizer, it's almost anything you wish. I LOVE using it when I'm having a bath or when my skin is in that confusing hormonal state when it can't decide between having spots or dry patches. It sorts both out and I love that. It's hydrating & balancing at the same time. It decreases or diminishes spots through the night. I also love the initial feeling I get from it - it's cooling, because I store it in the fridge. A bit more here.

November Beauty Heroes Discovery featured the amazing Spanish brand Ayuna, Less Is Beauty. Oh my word, this box was SO good. The Hero was Essence Cream-in-Oil Peel* which is one of the best and most fun-to-use exfoliator/product I've tried. In my experience, Ayuna products are magical. Essence is a whipped cream exfoliant with the most beautiful cloud-like fluffy texture that reveals skin's radiance in three phases. You apply it as a mask and then gently roll it off your skin with fingers. It's not a scrub with beads in it so it's not harsh. After removing it completely with a dry cloth you're left with a lightweight oil on the skin and that just blows my mind. From a mask, to exfoliator and then to an oil. What?? It's amazing and not only that it makes my skin softer and smoother, the whole experience is so lovely and my skin always looks amazing the next day. In this box there were two Sidekicks, Ayuna Nourishing Artisan Soap* and Rejuvenating Cream II*. Both gorgeous as well. I just can't with this brand, how can it be so good? I can easily use the soap on my face, no problems, no tightens just clean and fresh skin. I misjudged the Cream II at the beginning cause I thought it would be a bit much for my combination skin, but boy was I wrong! It's rich in ingredients that bring my skin to life, it's nourishing and hydrating but NOT at all heavy or thick. My skin drinks it up like nobody's business and then, even tho it's fully absorbed, it moisturizes my skin all day (or night). Review here.

December Beauty Discovery featured Khus + Khus, a unified, holistic line of hybrid philosophies, rooted in the fundamental belief that botanicals work within the body through the bloodstream and nervous system to deliver specific results, as well as broad benefits. The Hero was the Bleu Body Wax*, which is a stunning body balm/wax/goodness that brings peace and serenity. Not only with its ingredients and scent but also with its blue colour. The big jar of Bleu is so lush (and heavy!), the wax is very moisturizing and I love using it all over my body, as a hand cream, hair treatment, even an evening oil cleanser. Love. The Sidekick is the Sans Age Face Serum* (more here) which I love as well. It's very soothing and anti-inflammatory and it's just what I needed. Blue Tansy, German Chamomile, Helichrysum, I love thee so much. Such a special brand. Review of Bleu Body Wax here.

Oh goodness, it wasn't my intention to write this much, and I already hold myself back as it is! When you love, you love and you just want to say a lot. I love and highly recommend all these products and brands. They are so special and each one is unique in its own way. Like I said, I'm so very grateful for Beauty Heroes and their amazing curations. LOVE

I wanted to end this post expressing my love for these cute little cards that I used for my photos. In each Beauty Heroes Discovery you will find a card with a stunning photo of products and an inspirational quote on the other side. They are always so thoughtful and I love reading them so much. I loved this month's quote: "Choosing to engage with conscious companies that value sustainability, health, and reasonable profits is an act of Love. What effect will these acts of Love have on our global human economy? Let's find out together." - Jeannie Jarnot. It really resonates with me and I think it will with many of you as well. Another one I love, and which is probably my favourite of this year is from the November box:

"How can you invite more Love into your life right now?" - Jeannie Jarnot.

And on that I'm wishing you a very Merry Christmas!

Makeup Look: Sparkly Eyes & Red Lips

december 20, 2017

Just in time for Christmas I'm sharing with you my current go-to look. The standouts are the gorgeous Gressa Aureo Eye Tint and RMS Beauty Wild With Desire Lipstick in the shade Red.

Gressa Aureo Eye Tint* is hands down the best cream eyeshadow I've used! It's a cream formulation but it actually almost feels like powder. It's velvety. Most eyeshadows (also powder) tend to crease on me, not to mention cream eyeshadow. This baby doesn't! It depends, sometimes it stays crease-free all day and sometimes half a day. It's really amazing. Not to mention the beautiful warm beige, champagne colour with gold shimmer. It's quite sparkly. I either apply it with my fingers or with Gressa's Eyeshadow Brush*. It really is like nothing I've tried before and I absolutely love it! You can get it here (Beauty Heroes members get 15% off).

RMS Beauty Wild With Desire Lipstick in Red* is equally amazing as the Eye Tint. Mind you that it does contain some synthetic dyes but there's no Carmine or Lanolin. It does contain Beeswax, so not vegan. The colour Red is an orangey red and it's the perfect red lipstick for warm complexions. It's extremely pigmented, feels lovely on the lips and is very long lasting. I think it's one of the most long lasting lipsticks I've tried. Really impressed with it. Since it's so pigmented I like to first apply it straight from the bullet and then go in with Gressa's Precision Lip Brush* to make it all pretty around the edges. You can get the lipstick here.
There is also a video on my Instagram where you can see how is the pigmentation and I think it's just nice to see how they apply. You can check it out here.

Wishing all of you the lovelies holiday season!

Much love,

Jana xx

Not Really A Gift Guide

december 18, 2017

I don't think I ever wrote a post dedicated to Christmas gifts (not that it's anything wrong with them) and this year is no different. But I do want to mention a few things I've seen and liked. I know I'm super late with this kind of post but still, I want to link and write about a few things that have been on my mind.

It was actually the lovely Sarah who inspired me to do a post like this. Sarah is all about sustainability, using products that are made with people and the environment in mind. Using fairtrade & organic products in glass or aluminium, no plastic. She is all about simplicity and attainable products. Love everything she stands for. Plus she is a total sweetheart, always so kind and friendly. Definitely check out her beautiful blog here. So, Sarah wrote this article for Meow Meow Tweet's blog where she shared some wonderful gift ideas. I loved her thoughtful ideas and the fact that you don't need to spend huge amounts of money to give someone something special (an experience or a trip is also a gift!) and in the article you can also find one of my own DIY's. Read more here. And while you're at it, check out MMT's products as well. I have yet to try one of their deodorants, which are btw in biodegradable packaging. Yas! In Europe available at Reina Organics. The beautiful Rayna will donate 5% from every order this month to support children in need in Bulgaria. #giveback
Since I already mentioned giving back, there are so many ways you could do that.

December time is all about buying gifts for people we know and love but wouldn't also be nice to give something to someone you don't really know personally? I already mention one example above, where you can kill two birds with one stone: buying a gift for someone (you can't go wrong with Leahlani Skincare) and at the same time you would be also contributing to giving back for children in need. Or for example if you are buying Christmas cards you could go with the ones that support someone else. This year I bought two different cards: one are to support Botrstvo v Sloveniji (Sponsorship in Slovenia), which is a humanitarian project that concentrates on helping children and youth from socially disadvantaged families from all over Slovenia, and the other are to support Center slepih, slabovidnih in starejših (Centre for blind, visually impaired and seniors).

Or you could simply donate to a charity of your choosing. It doesn't have to be a lot, 5€ is better than nothing. Truth be told I was always a bit wary of donating and thinking is the money really going in the right hands but this year I decided to trust more and I donated to Sea Legacy. As you surely know oceans are not what they once were. There's tons of plastic, chemical pollutant and other shit, and by oceans I also mean seas and rivers and just water in general. Adriatic Sea is also full of plastic. Anyways, Sea Legacy is on a mission to create a world where our oceans will again be healthy and abundant. I urge you to check them out here and if you can donate or spread the word. Follow them on Instagram too @sealegacy. While you're at it you can also watch Blue Planet 2 and surely this will encourage you to do something. We have to keep reminding ourselves of this problem, otherwise we quickly forgot and ignore it. Ignorance is bliss but it's no way to live.

These are just a couple of things you can do for others this December, but there are also so, SO many more. Even though I might sound all high and mighty, none of us is perfect but we can all try and do better. You know even talking about it is good. You can even inspire someone to say no to a plastic bag in a grocery shop. Be mindful of your choices. Support local and/or ethical companies. Avoid plastic.

And please don't buy any more of those horrible paraffin based candles with synthetic fragrances. They're not good for you nor the planet. Choose quality over quantity and rather choose non-gmo Soy based or Beeswax candles (stay away from palm oil candles too!).

As you could see this post was a bit all over the place. From a gift guide to giving back and then to Blue Planet 2 and candles. Something not so "normal" and usual from me but I hope you liked it nonetheless.

With love,

Jana xx

Detox Your Body & Reveal Beautiful Skin

december 14, 2017

Let's continue with a very similar theme to my previous post and let's talk some more about how to get rid of dry skin. This time it's about skin on your body and while you're at it you can do some detoxifying as well. Even though I think that what you eat and drink is most important, I didn't plan on writing much about that. At the end of the day the whole healthy lifestyle isn't complicated, it may be hard but it's pretty straightforward. Everyone knows that vegetables are the best, fruit as well, lots of water, exercise, skip sugar, white flour and all that as much as you can. There are so many things you can eat to help your body, or rather your liver, to detoxify. Wait till January and everybody is going to talk about detox. Not that that's bad it's just how it is. Anywho, like I said I won't be talking about food but rather about a few practices you can do to help your body detoxify & also improve the texture and appearance of the skin.
Before moving forward I want to say a few words about lymphatic system. I've touched on the importance of a good flowing lymph in this post, perhaps I should tell you a little more about it. I feel like lymphatic system is one of the most important systems in our bodies and is one that we often forget about. It pretty much touches every single part of your body. It is a part of the circulatory system and a very important part of the immune system, comprising a network of lymphatic vessels that carry a clear fluid called lymph. The lymphatic system’s main function is to cleanse out toxins and keeping your lymphatic system functioning properly is directly related to the overall health of the body.

BUT unlike blood, lymph does not have a pump that would help it flow and that's why our lymphatic system can easily become stagnant. Mine sure did last week and is probably like that every day, cause I spend all day every day sitting. And sitting is THE WORST. Luckily keeping the lymph moving doesn’t take much, otherwise we would be all sick constantly. But there's nothing wrong with prevention and I'm sure your lymphatic system could do with a little bit of help. Mine sure appreciates it.

One of the easiest things you can do is drink plenty of water. Lemon water in the morning is a great detoxifier so definitely try that. I'm slacking on this but I do make sure to drink plenty of water through the day. The next very easy thing you can do is go for a walk. Walks, especially power walks are great for your lymphatic system. I think that 20-30 minutes per day can do great things for your body. If you're not an outdoorsy person you can do some stretching and yoga. Some poses are especially beneficial, like inversions and twisting, but any yoga flow is very beneficial. Not only for your body but also for your mind. You can find some amazing detox yoga videos on YT, personally I would go with Yoga With Adriene. You could also simply place your legs up the wall, that one is surely the easiest pose to do. My cousin LOVES IT and she is doing it all the time.
Another thing I adore is dry body brushing. This is the best practice for not only keeping your lymph flowing but it's also amazing for the skin. If you do it regularly you will find that you really don't need any oils or lotion to keep your skin hydrated, even in winter time. It's quite magical really! I dedicated a whole post to dry body brushing years ago, check it out here (it's in Slovene). Dry body brushing or dry skin brushing is an Ayurvedic practice where you simply brush your dry skin with a brush. As with yoga, you can find some great videos on how to do it. The most important thing to keep in mind is that you always have to brush towards the heart to help with detoxification.

I like to start with my right leg, starting at my feet and then with long brush strokes moving up. I continue on my right butt cheek and I end the move towards the front of my body and towards the groin area. Then I do the same on my left leg. I follow with upward and clockwise movements on my stomach and upward strokes on my lower to mid back. Then right arm, again from the fingers to my shoulder and then gently towards the heart. Same on the left side. I brush down the sides of my neck. I brush the back of my neck down and towards the front, to the heart. I do the the same on my upper back. I finish with strokes down my armpits, first the right side and then left. From armpit, under my boob to the heart. Be more gentle on your decolletage, as you would be on your legs for example. In time you really get used to the feeling. This takes only a few minutes and then I hop in the shower. After dry skin brushing you will feel energized and woken up and that's why it's a wonderful practice to do in the mornings.
To follow dry skin brushing I picked a detoxifying wash, Linné's Activate Body Wash*. This product contains activated charcoal which is yet another great detoxifying ingredient. It has an invigorating scent, it doesn't lather, yet it does make your skin black to dark gray and yes, you do have to be careful to rinse it all off, otherwise it can stain your towel. It's not a permanent stain and it does wash off in the washing machine. I heard it helps with body acne so definitely a product to consider if you have that problem.
Last but most certainly not least is a new-to-me product and a new-to-me Ayurvedic practice. Meet the incredible KHUS + KHUS Bleu Body Wax*. This stuff is so freakin good! I got this baby in the December Beauty Heroes box and they describe it as "an innovative twist on a classic body butter, infused with traditional and decadent botanicals". It's not a balm but it is a balm, but it's more of a wax, but then it's not a wax. It's very unique. It has a hard consistency like coconut oil has, but way nicer and softer. Think of mixing coconut oil with some oils and a little bit of beeswax. I usually scoop it out with my finger and then it melts beautifully in contact with the skin. It's filled with calming, anti-inflammatory ingredients with a scent that brings peace and serenity. The whole product gives me those feels, the scent, the colour, the ingredients, everything just goes together so perfectly. You can get it here.

Bleu Body Wax has been formulated for daily Abhyanga self-massage, which is another beautiful Ayurvedic practice. Abhyanga simply translates to ´oil massage´ and is recommended to balance your dosha. This massage should be done before a shower: starting massaging your head and then the rest of your body. Traditionally you would use quite a lot of oil to really massage your body vigorously, to help release toxins from the tissue. As you may have gathered it by now, this massage is done in a way that helps your lymph to move, so it should always be done in the direction of the heart. Instead of doing it the traditional way, I prefer applying the body wax as you would think, after a shower. I start with my neck, shoulders, chest, then arms, stomach and back. I massage my legs, always with strokes towards the heart. Around the joints you can do some circular movements, but other than that you always massage in the direction towards the heart. Lastly you massage your feet, from ankle all the way to the toes. I pretty much do it the same way as Jeannie. Definitely check out her article about Abhyanga. She also shared a YT video about the massage. Read the post here. I don't do this every single day but it is such a beautiful practice. Loving your body is so important and this massage definitely helps with feeling good about your body. There is something very special about it and I find it most relaxing.

I don't do all these practices every day but I certainly do at least one of them, if not two.
What about you?

With love,

Jana xx

Soothe Dry, Fussy Skin + A Few Updates

december 11, 2017

I wanted to talk about a few products that have been keeping me company last week, when I spent most of my days nicely tucked away in bed. Not sure about you but when I'm sick my skin can turn a bit dry and in need of more intense care. I’m sure we all know that when being sick the most important thing is hydration – lots of water, tea, lemon water with ginger, turmeric and black pepper, also smoothies, fruits. You know how it goes. Surprisingly this time my skin was doing quite well. It was hydrated, soft and strangely quite calm and without redness as well. It was a bit different around my nose because of my constant blowing but even that wasn’t as bad as some other times. As mentioned, I tried to drink as much as I could but some skincare products also immensely helped keeping my skin happy.
Where should I start? Let’s go with skincare. I’ve been really into the new face balm Tigress* from Earthwise Beauty. This is such a special balm and it’s like no other balm I’ve tried before. As it’s always the case when it comes to EWB products, Tigress contains unique and interesting ingredients, like Kokum and Ucuuba Butters (say whaat?), Passion Fruit, Babassu and Sapote Oils, and many more. There's no Shea or Cocoa Butters which is wonderful for my skin because Cocoa Butter can clog my pores. No Beeswax as well, which makes this roaring balm vegan friendly. Tigress is very lightweight, especially if you think of balm textures. It melts upon touching the skin and it’s absorbed beautifully into the skin. It’s really not thick or greasy but truly really different. You know dry oils? Well this to me is a dry balm. A balm that was specifically created for acne prone and oily skin types, but I hear it also works for dry skin. It is a wonderful balm! It doesn’t cause any break out or clogged pores but it actually heals my skin. Plus it’s hydrating. Very, very lovely product. You can expect a full review in a few weeks when I will use it for longer but for now you can get it here. Use my affiliate code "Loveliness" to get 15% off.
Ok so I’ve been using Tigress balm in the evenings but through the day I’ve been loving the December Sidekick product, the KHUS + KHUS Sans Age Face Serum*. I’ve been so impressed with this month's Beauty Heroes Discovery, first with the Bleu Body Wax whish is just dreamy and lately also with the face serum. Sans Age Face Serum is formulated with ingredients to diminish signs of inflammation, and increase a look of vitality and youthfulness in skin. Ever heard of the term "inflamm-aging"? KHUS + KHUS understands the biochemical connection between systemic inflammation and visible signs of aging. Aka take care of inflamed and reveal youthful skin. Helichrysum, Blue Tansy, German Chamomile, and a few more ingredients, this oil has been keeping my skin soothed and less inflamed. Always something I love in skincare products. You can get this beautiful face serum in the December Beauty Heroes box, check it out here.
Another impressive balm is the newest Kari Gran product, the Essential Balm*. This stunner was in the Beauty Heroes Holiday Discovery and it really is such a gorgeous balm. Like Tigress this one is also different to other balms because it doesn't contain any butters. Only beautiful organic oils and beeswax. These ingredients create a very smooth and soft consistency which I love. After all that lying in bed and rubbing my face in the pillow, this balm provide a wonderful hydrating pick me up in the middle of the day. Not to mention the gorgeous scent. Love. Read more about the Essential Balm in this post and get it here.
For the skin around my nose I highly recommend the Maya Chia Supercritical Chia Waterless Wonder Balm*. I have the Limited Edition scent which I so kindly received in a Beauty Heroes box (quick review here). I only have a tiny bit left and that was all I needed to soothed and take care of the very dry and flaky skin around my nose. In this article this is the third balm I'm mentioning and this one is also unique in its own way and different to the other two. Contains Shea Butter and a few oils. I find it most nourishing and I assume that's because shea butter creates almost a film on the skin and takes care ofit so well. Really impressed! I'm not sure if this beautiful sweet and floral scent is still available but you can get Traditional citrus scent. Check it out here.
Sometimes I used the Maya Chia balm on my lips as well but Hurraw! Vata Lip Balm* performed much, much better at keeping my lips soft and plumped. Nothing new here, I've been a fan of Hurraw lip balms for so many years now & I don't plan on stopping anytime soon.
Special mention has to go to the Aphrodite Facial Steam* from Earthwise Beauty. This herbal blend is filled with Calendula, Marshmallow Root, Linden Flowers, Cornflower Petals and more. Not only it is wonderful for the skin but it also helps to combat congestion and soothe coughing. Perhaps some other herbs would be even more beneficial but I've been using this one and loving it. It offered some relief and I could breathe more easily + it always makes my skin softer and more hydrated. Facial steaming is very good for the skin and I really should do it more often. You can get Aphrodite here. Also check out their newer facial steam called Selene. In Europe you can get EWB products at Eminessences.
Baths also help with congestion and they always make me feel better. The bath product I've been currently into is GLOW Bedtime Bath Salts* from Kiss The Moon. I love that this product contains Epsom Salts which are very benefical and help body to recover and detoxify. They also help to relaxe muscles and reduce swelling. I will say that these bath salts don't have the best scent but luckily it isn't too strong and I don't even smell it when the bath is full of water. I probably use too much but I wish the bag would last me a bit longer. I got less than 10 baths out of it.

I spent many hours in bed so I need to mention the series I watched and highly recommend. First is Dark, a German series that in the beginning gives the feels of Stranger Things but it is much more grown-up and like the name says, dark. You can watch it on Netflix. Another series I watched and loved is The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel which takes place in the 50s in New York where a housewife decides to become a stand-up comic. Season 2 of The Crown is also out, another series worth watching. Are you watching Blue Planet 2? You should!<3
